How do I earn professional development hours (PDH)?

There are a variety of activities that are eligible to earn PDH to renew your credential.The International Board of Functional Medicine Certification (IBFMC)™ has established four distinct PDH categories with specific minimum and maximum limits.

    • Continuing Education & Training: This category must account for at least 50% of your total required PDH (which equals a minimum of 37.5 hours of a standard 75-hour renewal cycle). There is no cap on this category, meaning you are permitted to earn up to 100% of your hours here. Eligible activities include things like attending functional medicine conferences, workshops, webinars, or courses.
    • Content Development & Delivery: You can earn a maximum of 15 PDH in this category. This includes developing, reviewing, or presenting functional medicine sessions for professional organizations, or teaching functional medicine courses for academic credit at an accredited institution.
    • Research: You can earn a maximum of 15 PDH in this category. Credit is awarded for being a published primary or co-author on functional medicine research studies in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Volunteer SME (Subject Matter Expert): You can earn a maximum of 15 PDH in this category. This applies to volunteering with the Functional Medicine Certification Program™ to assist with exam development and other related certification board activities.
